Boy Scout units are grouped into a geographic district. These districts come together to form a Boy Scout Council. A group of Boy Scout Councils are then geographically grouped together to form an area. Area 6 consists of eight councils:
- Del-Mar-Va Council
- National Capital Area Council
- Baltimore Area Council
- Mason-Dixon Council
- Pennsylvania Dutch Council
- Hawk Mountain Council
- Chester County Council
- New Birth of Freedom Council
Furthermore, a group of areas is organized as a region. Area six is one of six areas in the Northeast Region, which collectively contains about sixty councils. The northeast region spans from Maine to Maryland. Finally, there are four regions that form the Boy Scouts of America.
The goal of an Area is to provide direct support to the councils it serves. This is done through providing guidance and a communication medium with other councils in the area, region, and nation.
